SELECCIÓN BATALLÉ LEADS THE PROJECT AUTHENTICATION OF DUROC BREED PORK PRODUCTS USING GENETIC MARKERS (GENDUROC)

Pork products from Duroc breed have characteristics that enable to recognize them as a sign of quality. Therefore, the sector has expressed the need to implement a product authentication system with Duroc label.

This project will use DNA analysis as a technique to look for unique and/or specific Duroc DNA variants that will allow to exclude batches of products erroneously identified as 100% or 50% Duroc.

The main objective of the project is to begin a process for validating an authentication system for meat products with the Duroc label.

The specific objectives are:

1) Validate the capacity of the MC1R/KIT1 polymorphic system to reject products labelled as 100% or 50% Duroc which do not meet those conditions.

2) Identify a range of exclusive and specific markers that enable identification of Duroc products within a reference population.

3) Develop and validate an efficient genotyping protocol for suggestive Duroc markers in meat products that may potentially be tracked.

The tasks of the GENDUROC project will be developed during the years 2020-2022. In the project participates GEPORK S.A. Group, Selección Batallé S.A. as leader and the Catalan Association of Innovation of the pork sector (INNOVACC) as a coordinator.

The project has received the support of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). Project funded through Operation 16.01.01 (cooperation for innovation) of the RDP of Catalonia 2014-2020.
