SELECCIÓN BATALLÉ PARTICIPATE IN THE PROJECT STRATEGIES TO OBTAIN BOAR TAINT FREE PORK (Q-OLOR)

The meat from entire males can produce the sensory defect of boar taint. Traditionally, the solution to this problem is the surgical castration of piglets. Currently, some of the alternatives that are being studied for the reduction of boar taint are the inmunocastration or the genetic selection.

The objectives of the project are:
1. To determine an optimal inmunocastration guideline to guarantee a final product of quality.
2. To evaluate the possibility of indirect selection of entire males for indicators of aggressiveness to reduce boar taint.
3. To validate the direct selection for genetic markers associated with boar taint.
4. To evaluate a non-invasive laser sensor to detect boar taint at the slaughter line.

The tasks of the Q-OLOR project, lasting three years, began in September 2019. Selección Batallé is the leader of the project in which two more companies from the sector and the NORFRISA pig slaughterhouse participate. The Institute of Research in Agriculture and Food Technologies (IRTA) participates as an R&D agency. The coordinator of the project is the Catalan Association of Innovation of the pork sector (INNOVACC).

This project has been co-financed by the European Union through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Project funded through Operation 16.01.01 (cooperation for innovation) of the RDP of Catalonia 2014-2020.
